Vincent stared at the wall.
“You’ve been staring at that wall for 15 minutes.  What’s so special about it?”
“It’s a nice wall. It’s kinda shiny, got a nice pattern to it.”
Aaron crossed his arms.  “I don’t think that’s why you’re staring at it.”
“Okay, fine.  I’m listening to it.  I think I heard Derrick.”
“Derrick’s not the one we’re looking for.”
“I know that.  Still, the wall knows more than it let’s on.”
“The wall is not sentient.”
“Says you, Mr. Expert On Wall-Based Sentience.”
Vincent reached out, delicately, as if the wall was going to bite him, then touched the wall.
Nothing happened.
“Yep, it’s a wall.”
“Shut up and let me focus.”
He pressed his ear against the wall, and knocked on it.  He could certainly hear something now.  It was faint, but getting louder.
“… so I said to the idiot, ‘And what have we got on this thing? A Cuisinart?  Punch it.  So he makes a fist and- Hey, Vincent, what are you doing here?”
“I’m looking for someone.  What are you doing here, wall?”
“Wall?” The wall sounded incredulous.  Then Derrick’s head appeared out of it.
“Do I look like a wall to you?”
“Not anymore, you don’t. Have you seen-” Thomas poked his head out of the wall.
“Hey, Vincent. Have you met Derrick? He is- was one of the security guards here.”
“No, you were right the first time. It’s ‘is.'”
“Well, that’s cool. I wish I could keep my job posthumously.”
“Well, you could be co-night guard. You’ve got… well… forever for Derrick to train you.”
“That’s true. Hey, I’m sorry I didn’t show the other night. I had… some sort of loss of my ability to exist.”
“Yeah, that’ll happen,” Aaron rolled his eyes at Vincent, then opened his mouth.
“What Vincent means is that if you get too unfocused, like by letting too much emotion overwhelm you or something, you’ll fade out, and back into the Void.”
Vincent somehow managed to keep his jaw from dropping. “… How do you know that?”
“TL;DR version: None of your damn business.”
“Okay, that works for me. Thomas, did you still want us to bring your wife around?”
“Yes, please. As much as I’m not angry anymore after meeting Derrick, I would still like to see her again.”
“Will do, buddy. Just do me a favor and make sure there isn’t a third ghost here tomorrow night.”
